Description:

George Will famously said: "The phrase 'domestic cat' is an oxymoron." The question of whether domestic cats should be allowed to roam freely outdoors is a highly contentious issue. The people who care for feral and stray cats believe cats have the same rights as any other creature to populate the great outdoors. Critics argue that cats are natural hunters and free-roaming cats, who kill many birds, reptiles, mammals and important insects like butterflies and dragonflies, are a major threat to biodiversity. Our panelists are all well versed in these issues and have developed successful programs that bridge the gap between protecting wildlife and managing stray and feral cat populations. The panel will discuss how Trap, Neuter and Return programs can reduce and ultimately eliminate the number of feral cats without resorting to more drastic solutions, how outdoor cats can be used to manage pests such as rats, and how successful wildlife protection programs can be developed and managed to co-exist with exiting cat populations.
