Description:
A panel of legal and mental health practitioners will explore the intersection of criminal justice and mental health in New York courts, including its historical context, strategies for reducing harm and criminalization of people struggling with mental illness, and a potential road map for expanded treatment-based alternatives. Speakers will answer: How did we come to rely on the criminal legal system to address mental illness? Are such policies in need of change? How can we transform existing practices and move toward more robust non-carceral solutions to a public health issue?
