Description:
Organ trafficking, forced organ harvesting, and unethical organ transplantation are global issues.  Join us for a presentation by Wayne Jordash KC followed by a panel discussion where we will explore the risks of international collaborations in transplant medicine, research, and training and the hard and soft law obligations that govern those partnerships. Our panel will highlight high risk countries such as China, provide practical advice for mitigating risk, outline circumstances where disengagement may be required, and covers strategies to protect human rights in organ transplantation.

Speakers:
Wayne Jordash KC
Wayne is a world leading lawyer specializing in international human rights and humanitarian law, particularly in high risk and conflict-affected areas. Wayne specializes in providing advice to governments, international organizations, corporations and communities on how to comply with IHRL and IHL, manage human rights risks and how to seek redress in the international human rights and criminal law system. His work involves advising on all aspects of accountability and human rights due diligence, human rights investigations, and fact-finding missions throughout the globe. Wayne is also an internationally recognized expert in the global network of international tribunals, including at the International Criminal Court.

Eleanor Stephenson
Eleanor is an international criminal lawyer and currently works on the defense at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in the Hague. She is a qualified barrister in England and Wales. She has previously worked on the prosecution at the International Criminal Court on the Darfur situation, and for the defense at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. She also appears domestically in the Crown and Magistrates Courts in the UK in extradition and criminal matters. Eleanor’s practice is complemented by her commercial arbitration and litigation experience gained while working in private practice in London. Alongside court work, she provides advice to NGOs and victim communities in relation to human rights abuses of minority groups in China. She prepares legal submissions and drafts correspondence on behalf of NGOs to the United Nations Special Rapporteur mechanisms in relation to the state sanctioned regime of forced organ harvesting in China. She is also involved in law reform in the UK on the issue.

Anne Zimmerman, JD, MS, CIPP-US, CEET, Founder, Modern Bioethics; Chair, New York City Bar Association Bioethical Issues Committee; Editor-in-Chief, Voices in Bioethics (Columbia University journal and podcast); Consultant, MyBioethics (ed-tech app); Co-Founder, Co-Chair, Bioethics Forum of the Collaborative for Palliative Care. Her recent book, Medicine, Power, and the Law: Exploring a Pipeline to Injustice, explores the relationships between medicine, science, and technology and the criminal and civil justice systems. Her bioethics forum provides space to analyze ethical dilemmas and engage in group writing projects for scholarly publications in general bioethics, environmental ethics, and AI and tech ethics. Her wide-ranging publications include Medicalization’s Opportunity Costs: A Critique of Societal Acceptance of ADHD in Deconstructing ADHD: Mental Disorder or Social Construct? and Values in AI: Bioethics and the Intentions of Machines and People in AI Ethics.

Lara Strangways
Lara Strangways is the Head of Business and Human Rights and a senior legal consultant at Global Rights Compliance. In her role at GRC, she provides advisory services to international organisations, governments, and businesses on international humanitarian and international criminal law, with a focus on human rights due diligence, corporate accountability, and remediation.
