Description:
War in Ukraine has displaced five million refugees in the span of a few short weeks, prompting the US and EU to expand resettlement programs for Ukrainians fleeing the conflict. Yet, even as the US and Europe open their arms to Ukrainians, restrictions remain in place for refugees, asylum-seekers, and migrants from Central America, the Sahel, and the Middle East, often in direct violation of the universal rights afforded to people seeking refuge and asylum. This event will feature a conversation with David Miliband, President of the International Rescue Committee, followed by a panel of legal and policy experts who will reflect on the role and responsibility of the US and other countries with respect to human mobility. The event coincides with the UN’s first “International Migration Review Forum,” (May 17-20), which will culminate in an intergovernmental “Progress Declaration.” Issues related not only to refugees, but also to stateless persons, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and people displaced by disaster, especially climate change-related disaster, are of increasing concern. Our panel will step back from domestic policy to look at the larger global reordering of migration and will explore the importance of U.S. leadership on the international stage.
