Among prosecutors in New York County, Thomas E. Dewey is remembered as having ushered in the era in which the District Attorney's office has been staffed by professional prosecutors chosen on merit rather than through political patronage. Dewey first came to the public's attention as a prosecutor in the 1930s, instituting successful criminal proceedings against gangsters, bootleggers and organized crime figures of the day. By 1937, Dewey was elected District Attorney of New York County, where he served one term before resigning to run for governor. The awards are made possible by the generosity of the firm of Dewey Pegno & Kramarsky LLP.

For the health and safety of our community and as part of New York City’s Key to NYC program, as of September 7, 2021 all visitors to the New York City Bar are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. At the time of your visit, in order to enter the City Bar, you will be required to show proof that you are at least 14 days past your final dose of a vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration or the World Health Organization, in combination with a matching photo ID. Proof of vaccination may include a valid paper vaccination record, a photo of a valid vaccination record, the NYC COVID Safe App, or the New York State Excelsior Pass.  Effective December 14, visitors between 5 and 11 years old must show proof of having received one dose.  Visitors who are under 5 years old and therefore not yet eligible for vaccination are exempt from the requirement, but must wear a mask and be accompanied by a vaccinated adult.
