Description:
Excluded from private bar associations in the United States nationwide, the country’s pioneering Black lawyers founded the National Negro Bar Association in 1912, giving rise to the National Bar Association in 1925 and the Black bar associations that followed. Black bar associations have catalyzed historic change led by generations of Black attorneys who shaped civil rights freedoms for Black Americans and for all Americans, advanced the rule of law and pioneered pro bono legal services. Join us this Black Heritage Month for a conversation on the history of Black bar associations and the critical role they play today, from cultivating Black lawyers to furthering the legal profession and our democracy.
