Description:
Diplomacy and the law are interactive and interdependent. As discussed in the recent publication, The Research Handbook on Law and Diplomacy (Elgar 2022), the tools of diplomacy are frequently deployed by governments and members of civil society to promote the rule of law across borders. This panel brings together leaders from the judiciary, NGOs, and the practicing bar who direct programs and projects to promote law, legal institutions, and access to legal services and justice across borders. Panelists will discuss their respective roles in promoting the rule of law at the international level and in societies undergoing constitutional transitions and experiencing economic and/or political crises. Among the topics to be addressed: building support for international law and courts; coordination and support of the legal profession across borders during times of crisis-- including following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022; promotion of private and commercial law; diplomatic and civil society support of democracy and human rights.
