Description:
Sex addiction in our society is a major mental health concern, adversely affecting the individual (both men and women), their families, and the businesses and institutions in which they work.  There are an estimated 18 to 24 million people who struggle with sex addiction, and because severe marital problems including divorce and custody issues, criminal justice problems, and harassment issues are inherent in this addiction, many lawyers as well as therapists are quite likely to encounter sex addicts in their practices.  This workshop will offer an overview of what sexual addiction is (and isn’t), guidance on how to establish a compassionate and nonjudgmental approach to a client who is a sex addict, its signs and symptoms, and recommendations for helping spouses and families troubled by this issue.  Suggestions for maintaining secure boundaries when working with sex addict clients will also be included.

Moderator:
Eileen Travis, Executive Director, New York City Bar Lawyer Assistance Program

Speaker:
Chris Samuels, Ph.D., is among psychotherapy's pioneers in addressing the reality of sexual addiction as a major societal problem affecting the individual, the family, our institutions, and the workplace. The Sexual Addiction Treatment and Training Institute (SATTI), which Dr. Samuels founded in 1992, continues to offer evaluation and treatment for sex addicts and their families, training and supervision for mental health professionals, and a range of consultation services to business and industry, religious institutions, and the media concerning sexual addiction and sexual harassment.
