Description:
Mr. Aldrich has written a book about the partnership between Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson (former president of the NYC Bar Association) and Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall both during World War II and during the seventeen months preceding Pearl Harbor when they desperately tried to prepare the country for war each man knew was coming.  A constant theme that runs through the dual biography is the remarkable synergy created when the Wall Street lawyer combined his training and talents with the Army lifer.  Stimson was one of the nation’s leading lawyers and his core staff of five men all came out of Harvard Law School.  That staff, considered the premier staff in Washington DC during the War, worked as seamlessly with their colleagues in the Army as Stimson did with Marshall.  Aldrich has described their accomplishment during the War as "the greatest feat of management in the history of the world.”

Reviewing the rise of each man to the top of their respective professions, the speaker will explain why the talents of New York lawyers were in such high demand during the War and why the training and practice of law was so beneficial to the success they had in assisting the Army in the preparation for war and the actual conduct of it.  It will detail the two men’s accomplishments and highlight the big issues that they faced together during the War.  Aldrich’s book The Partnership: George Marshall, Henry Stimson, and the Extraordinary Collaboration that Won World War II, has received positive reviews from, among others, Walter Isaacson, Evan Thomas, and Kai Bird and got a coveted star rating from the Library Journal.  It is being released April 15th.
