Description:
Even prior to COVID-19, LGBTQ+ youth were at greater risk for poor mental health impacts than their straight and cisgender peers. The pandemic has layered on additional risk factors for LGBTQ+ youth, such as financial strain, educational disruption, increased anxiety and family acceptance struggles. This panel discussion on the mental health needs of LGBTQ+ youth will explore the legal implications of seeking care, ways to protect privacy rights under HIPAA in the COVID era, and whether telehealth has been an aid or an obstacle in providing mental health care to youth. We will cover how these answers differ depending on where the young person resides, an overview of laws governing telehealth in New York State and their applicable requirements, considerations for attorneys representing youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and intersectionality issues around the mental health of LGBTQ+ youth of color and youth who have disabilities.
