Description:
In this two-part program seasoned attorneys, judges, and court staff
will provide a how-to guide for practicing in New York Supreme Court.
In Part One, Basic Geography, Terminology and Practice, the panel will
offer a nuts and bolts introduction to civil practice in the Supreme
Court. They will identify and discuss key differences between litigation
in New York state court and federal court, basic terms and key players
in the state courts, the rules of practice governing Supreme Court
practice, the locations of and functions of Supreme Court offices in New
York City, the mechanics of how a litigation progresses in the Supreme
Court, filing papers and courtroom custom and practice.
In Part Two, The Basics of Litigation in the NYS Supreme Court, the
panel will provide an overview of how to litigate a civil action in the
Supreme Court in New York City. They will discuss the lifecycle of
common categories of Supreme Court actions, including how to initiate an
action, seeking preliminary relief, discovery, motion practice,
hearings and trials, judgment collection and alternative dispute
resolution in the Supreme Court.
