Description:
The pandemic has taken its toll on New York City’s most vulnerable populations, presenting our nonprofit community with significant challenges about how best to meet growing needs, how to enable individuals and families to access life’s essentials, and how to do it all in a legally compliant way. This year’s annual fall CLE program will bring together experts from academia, law firms, and nonprofits to explore how nonprofits are expanding services, revitalizing traditional programming, and innovating to support those most in need.
The program will combine practical nuts-and-bolts learning for lawyers advising nonprofits, while also exploring topics that are of interest to and impact us all. The event will include a discussion of the contours of “poverty relief” under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, including how nonprofits identify the boundaries for engaging in such activities and how those boundaries shift over time, as well as in-depth conversation about how nonprofits are structuring and re-structuring to help New Yorkers access the essentials, including affordable housing and job training. The program will conclude with a tour through the innovative ways our communities – and the nonprofits that serve them – are pushing forward with concepts like mutual aid, fiscal sponsorship, and non-traditional governance models under the New York Not-for-Profit Corporation Law to bring their voices to these efforts.
