Description:
This program concerning international refugee law will offer analyses of the current law and policy in key jurisdictions in the Global North, including the U.S., E.U. countries, and Australia. Panelists will evaluate these legal regimes with reference to international refugee law, explaining current developments in the wider context of decades of cooperative non-entrée, or deterrence, committed to frustrating the territorial access of refugees from the Global South while largely maintaining the letter of the post-war international refugee law. More recently, a shift in this deterrence orientation has emerged: non-entrée tactics have intensified along with direct incursions upon the post-war international refugee law paradigm.
Panelists will offer close comparative analysis of developments in the aforementioned states concerning the status of refugees from the Global South. This comparative approach is provided to offer domestic practitioners relevant background in international refugee law for direct advocacy in a range of potential circumstances.
The event's final fifteen minutes will allow for advocacy projects and groups to promote attorney volunteer opportunities in relevant areas of refugee/asylum advocacy.
