Description:
Alec Karakatsanis is the Founder and Executive Director of Civil Rights Corps (CRC). Before CRC, Civil Rights Corps, Alec was a civil rights lawyer and public defender with the Special Litigation Division of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia; a federal public defender in Alabama, representing impoverished people accused of federal crimes; and is the author of Usual Cruelty: The Complicity of Lawyers in the Criminal Injustice System. He will speak on how the cash bail system works, putting New York’s bail reform efforts into a broader national context. Specifically, he will talk about the basic constitutional and policy issues involved in this system, what solutions are transformative and help end cycles of injustice, where New York fits in this conversation.
