Description:
In New York City, approximately 3,000 women die or experience a life threatening event related to childbirth each year. Black women are 8 times more likely than white women to die of pregnancy-related causes, and Asians and Latinas are also at elevated risk. This event will examine the ongoing maternal mortality crisis in the United States, and the persistent racial disparities in maternal outcomes that exist in New York City and State. After a screening of the FusionTV documentary short "Death By Delivery," an interdisciplinary panel of experts will bring perspectives from the fields of medicine, human rights law, and community-based activism to discuss promising approaches to the issue, including a campaign by the NYC Department of Health to promote human rights in birth, national policy efforts led by Black women, and advocacy by women's health physicians to support healthy pregnancies.
