Description:
Last year’s theme was about how men in the C-suite can be allies to women general counsel and their teams. This year we will host a panel of women general counsel who will discuss a modest proposal to institute quotas for awarding business to female-led or mixed gender legal teams. Do women lack business development skills? Or are their firms not giving them the opportunity to shine? A recent study suggests that it’s something else: male clients still favor male partners. Vivia Chen, Senior Columnist for The American Lawyer, Law.com, and Chief Blogger, The Careerist, highlights a recent report from Acritas: mixed gender teams significantly outperform single-sex teams on all industry recognized key performance indicators. Teams led by male and female partners performed equally well, but male clients are a third less likely than female clients to choose female lead partners. That difference in the way male and female clients allocate work to their outside counsel is significant, according to the report. It comes as no surprise that people give business to friends. A client is going to send business to golf partners, classmates, former roommates and fellow club members. Clients may not realize they have this bias; would quotas solve this.
