Description:
This program is intended to promote awareness of the high prevalence of both mental health and substance abuse issues among attorneys. A 2016 survey across 15 state bar associations (Krill, Johnson, & Albert 2016) found that 1 in 5 attorneys screened positive for problem drinking and reported similar rates of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. Attorneys like other high-status professionals experience stigma and barriers to treatment that are related to the demands of their jobs, their privacy, and confidentiality concerns. The presentation would summarize what is known and not known about mental health and substance use problems, barriers to seeking help, and unmet treatment needs of attorneys. The objective is two-fold in that it is intended create awareness of these issues and then to inform the audience as to what resources available to deal with these challenges.
