Description:
Whether you are a private law practitioner, in government service or at a not-for-profit organization, the public’s right to access governmental records through New York State’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) can impact your work and become a useful information-gathering tool. This program will provide a basic FOIL overview, explore litigation trends, and discuss possible reforms to this state law. Participants will hear from experienced legal experts hailing from diverse professional backgrounds, analyzing issues from different perspectives.

Moderated by ProPublica’s Jake Pearson, who currently covers the city’s police department, topics will include:

• FOIL practice basics;

• FOIL as a litigation aid;

• Access to law enforcement and disciplinary records;

• Litigation related to the repeal of § 50-a of the New York Civil Rights Law;

• Possible centralized FOIL oversight reforms;

And much more…
