Basic Mediation Training 2024

28 - Hour Basic Mediation Training

The 28-hour, four-day training will be provided in-person at the NYC Bar Association and will include breakfast and lunch on each day.

This 28-Hour Initial Mediation Training is designed to provide a firm foundation in the mediation of court disputes, with a blend of theory and practice.  The training will introduce skills and approaches designed to assist in the mediation of court-annexed cases.  Specific topics to be covered include: mediation norms in court-annexed cases, pre-mediation process, active listening, use of caucus, effective inquiry, and working through barriers to an agreement.  The training will also address issues of ethics, identity, and culture in mediation. A certificate of completion will be issued at the conclusion of the program.
This training is approved for the 24-hour training under Part 146 of the Rules of the Chief Administrative Judge. Final placement on any court roster is at the discretion of the local Administrative Judge and participation in a course that is either approved or pending approval does not guarantee placement on a local court roster. 

Attendance at all four days of the program is required.

Lead Trainer Bio:

Rebecca Price is the Director of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Program at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Prior to this position she directed the Mediation Clinic at Brooklyn Law School, was a Supervising Attorney in the Mediation Clinic at CUNY School of Law, and taught ADR at the New York University School of Continuing Professional Studies. Rebecca has also taught lawyering/legal writing, and interviewing and counseling, at Cardozo Law School, and was supervising attorney in the Economic Justice Program at CUNY School of Law. Rebecca is the former Coordinator of the Special Education/Early Intervention and ACCES VR Mediation Programs for Safe Horizon Mediation Program (now the New York Peace Institute). Before turning her focus to ADR, Rebecca was the Assistant Director of Visual AIDS, created and oversaw the Children’s Mental Health Project at New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, and was a Senior Attorney in the Special Litigation and Appeals Unit of the Mental Hygiene Legal Service. Rebecca is certified as an Initial Mediation Trainer for the Community Dispute Resolution Centers Program of the Unified Court System of the State of New York. Rebecca currently teaches an ADR Survey at New York University School of Law and is a frequent speaker and trainer about mediation, conflict resolution, and communication. In the Spring of 2023, she was appointed Lecturer in Law at Columbia Law School, overseeing the mediation clinical programs for that semester. Rebecca was named a 2017 honoree for Distinguished Leadership as part of the New York Law Journal’s Professional Excellence Awards, and Frontline Champion by the Association for Conflict Resolution of Greater New York for Mediation Settlement Day 2019. She lives in Brooklyn with her partner and her dogs.
