Description:
After years of advocacy from sex workers nationwide, decriminalizing sex work has become a 2020 campaign issue. The recent enactment of the Federal bill, Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA)/Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) has reignited the sex worker liberation movement and while the intent of the legislation was to combat online sex trafficking, sex worker rights activists warned that it would make their work less safe, and it would make them more vulnerable to clients. Last year New York law makers introduced the first statewide legislation to decriminalize sex work, Stop Violence in the Sex Trades Act.
What are the harms associated with criminalizing sex work and what are the factors to weigh when considering decriminalization? How does this impact different marginalized communities, particularly immigrants, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those with intersecting identities? This panel brings together lawyers and community activists to provide a variety of perspectives and information on criminalization, decriminalization, legalization, and Prohibitionist model, also known as the “Nordic” or Equality model used by other jurisdictions.
