Help Us Honor America’s First Openly LGBTQ Federal Judge

The New York City Bar Association, with its LGBTQ Rights and Women in the Legal Profession (WILP) Committees, are thrilled to announce the launch of a campaign to raise funds to commission a portrait honoring the late Honorable Deborah A. Batts to be hung in the New York City Bar Association’s landmarked building at 42 West 44th Street.

Judge Batts, an eminent jurist and adored professor, friend and colleague, was the nation's first openly LGBTQ Federal Judge. She passed away far too early in February 2020. Judge Batts was known for her vibrancy, kindness and the pleasure she took in life.

Judge Batts’ portrait is being commissioned as part of the “Women on the Walls” initiative, which was begun by the WILP Committee to honor female members of the legal profession with strong ties to the New York City legal community, with the goal of achieving gender representation in the art hung on the walls of the City Bar’s building. Justice Sonia Sotomayor and late Chief Judge Judith Kaye are judges whose portraits were previously commissioned as part of this initiative.

Your donation will help secure the portrait commission and a reception to unveil Judge Batts' portrait. Please consider donating to this important initiative to honor Judge Batts' legacy.
