2.0 Total: 1.0 Ethics & 1.0 Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias

Newly admitted New York attorneys (attorneys admitted to the New York State Bar for two years or less) cannot earn CLE credit in the category of Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias.
Experienced New York attorneys due to re-register on or after July 1, 2018 must earn one credit hour in Diversity, Inclusion and Elimination of Bias. Experienced attorneys who earn more than one credit in this category in their reporting period may use such credit to meet the remainder of the 24 credit hour biennial requirement (except for the Ethics & Professionalism credit requirement).

Description :
Part I: Wendy Amengual Wark and Paula T. Edgar will share practical, tangible steps that individuals can take to successfully navigate the complexities of implicit bias, macroaggressions, intersectionality, difficult conversations, and best practices for creating inclusive workplace relationships. These proactive strategies apply to legal practitioners in all sectors, public and private, in-house, and law firms.

Part II: Recent research demonstrates that lawyers suffer from mental health and substance abuse problems at significantly higher rates compared to other professionals as well as the general population. Many of the stressful challenges lawyers face in the performance of their work can exacerbate a pre-existing condition. Undiagnosed and/or untreated problems can result in negative consequences affecting every area of a lawyer’s professional and personal life. Stigma is the number one obstacle preventing lawyers from getting the help they need to address a problem.
