Description:
Domestic violence isn't just physical abuse--survivors face a myriad of harms, including economic abuse. When people are married or have children in common, tax related issues can be weaponized by abusive parties seeking to control finances, withhold funds, and keep their partners dependent on them. Many domestic violence, family law, and matrimonial law lawyers have heard clients share stories of stolen tax refunds, erroneous or fraudulent tax filings by their ex partners, and other issues, but they may not know the resources and remedies available. This panel of tax law experts will help inform practitioners about the tax rights and remedies of survivors, including what to do when children are erroneously claimed on a return, tax liability relief (including injured spouse and innocent spouse), and how to handle tax refund and COVID-19 stimulus check theft.
