OutLaws and Out Lawyers: Advice for New Attorneys
Wednesday, July 17, 2013, 6:00pm - 8:30pm
There is no charge for this program.
The LGBT Rights Committee of the New York City Bar is pleased to present a panel discussion on what it means for lawyers to be out in the workplace today. Many law firms and offices are welcoming environments for LGBT attorneys, and some even actively recruit from the LGBT community. Nevertheless, whether to be out at work can be a difficult issue for new (and sometimes for experienced) lawyers. Law students and young lawyers who may be wondering how to handle this question are encouraged to join us for an overview of the particular challenges • and benefits • of practicing openly as a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender attorney. Our panel will discuss what it is like to work in several different legal settings, including law firms, in-house, public interest, and the government. We’ll begin with a moderated discussion, during which each panelist will speak to their particular experience of how being out at work has impacted and shaped his or her career. Afterwards, audience members will have the opportunity to address their own concerns in a Q&A session. Young lawyers should leave the event feeling confidently equipped with the tools to help them navigate this sometimes tricky issue as they embark on their new legal careers. Attendees are invited to remain after the panel discussion for networking and socializing.
