Workplace religious discrimination claims are on the rise. With a rapidly globalizing world following the “tech-boom,” and a growing culture of hypervigilant “political correctness,” religion-based Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) claims have nearly doubled, and payouts have increased by over 150%. In Federal and state level anti-discrimination laws, freedom of religion and religious beliefs are protected in the workplace. Employers have a legal obligation to accommodate, within reason, an employee's religious practices and beliefs. It is not important nor relevant whether or not this religious belief is part of a majority or mainstream religious view, but rather that the employee's religious convictions are sincerely held. These accommodations may be days or time off for religious observances or permitting the wearing of religious clothing and articles.
