Public Affairs Luncheon
From Criminal Conviction to College Graduation:
How the Bard Prison Initiative Saves Lives through Education
Thursday, February 15, 2018 | 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Program Fee: $30

Since its founding in 1999 as a student volunteer program by our speaker, Max Kenner, the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) has grown into a degree-granting program that offers 165 courses each year, partners with 12 colleges, and enrolls over 300 incarcerated students full-time in programs that culminate in degrees from Bard College.   The majority of the BPI student body were first arrested as children. Few completed high school. The course of study is ambitious and matches the breadth and intensity of any undergraduate learning experience. After returning home, BPI alumni become independent taxpaying citizens. They work in business, the arts, and media; they attend graduate school; they have careers in the human services. Virtually none return to prison (97.5% of BPI graduates who leave prison never come back). They contribute to their communities in all the ways one might expect of any college graduate.  BPI is redefining the expectations associated with American systems of criminal justice and education.

The Public Affairs Luncheon Series features speakers who address matters of public interest. The luncheons provide a forum to enable members of the City Bar to network, socialize and discuss matters of interest. The luncheons are open to the public.
