Everyone benefits when men and women recognize that their common purpose of providing the best legal services to their clients can be achieved by being allies for each other. Topics respecting career advancement, such as taking on more challenging assignments, being given opportunities to engage in client-facing business development activities, and achieving pay equality, when raised solely by women, often fall on deaf ears.

There are men, some of whom call themselves “feminists,” who easily understand the strength in forming alliances with the women on their teams, and know the impact they can have by promoting diversity both in corporate legal departments and at law firms. The trend today by general counsels of publicly-traded corporations is to incentivize lawyers on the in-house teams which choose diverse outside counsel and to award additional compensation to the outside law firms which have women and diverse attorneys handling matters for corporate work. This is now being reflected in the RFP process as well.

Alliances happen when male general counsels have recognized and are aware of unconscious bias and how important it is to act as mentors and sponsors for the women in their department. Alliances happen when law firm management committees choose to create an environment which is committed to diversity and inclusion. Theoretically, the result should be better client service and satisfaction when male and female general counsels reach across the divide and ally themselves for a common goal.
