The City Bar Office for Diversity and Inclusion is pleased to present its Annual Diversity and Inclusion Conference. This year’s conference will focus on three discrete areas: the current state of LGBT, immigrant, and disability rights; the role of lawyers as individual and institutional activists; and strategies for initiating courageous conversations on the intersections of race, religion, gender identity/sexual orientation, and other affinity groups.

Session 1 | Whiplash on the Front Lines: Practitioners Discuss the Push-Pull of Progress
It often seems as if diversity movements take two steps forward, and then a few steps back. Recent efforts on LGBT, immigrant, and disability rights have resulted in impressive successes, but have also seen comprehensive backlash to undermine those wins. Practitioners on the front lines will speak to recent developments, as well as the strategies they are deploying to shore up their hard-fought victories.

Session 3 | Courageous Conversations, Intersectionality & Leadership Engagement
At this session, we will explore the interconnected nature of categorizations such as race, religion, gender and LGBT status. We will discuss how overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage can create opportunities for strength.  We will also debate the thorny challenges that leaders face in navigating the complexities of intersectional relationships.  Attendees will be inspired by the courageous conversations they hear and leave with a greater understanding of how to initiate such conversations to better acknowledge, embrace and support the differences among us.
