Difficult Emotions and Mindful Action

In the practice of law we meet conflict and injustice. The accumulation of small daily grievances or confronting larger systemic social challenges may manifest as difficult emotions, chronic stress, or compassion fatigue. Mindful practices can help us recognize and manage these emotional triggers and also highlight the positive values underpinning the emotional response. Meeting difficult emotions with mindfulness can reaffirm a vision for social justice and prepare us to take appropriate action in the face of these challenges.

Bjorn Sorenson serves as counsel, consultant, and coach to mission-driven social entrepreneurs, businesses, and leaders. Bjorn has studied and taught mindfulness and conflict resolution for over 15 years and is a frequent presenter at the New York City Bar Association Mindfulness in Law Group. Bjorn has completed the intensive Practicum in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School and a year-long Mindfulness in Law Teacher Training.
