Description:
Betty Weinberg Ellerin has been a pioneer for female attorneys, and she paved the way for women to hold important positions in the courts. She was the first woman to be appointed Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for the courts of the City of New York in 1982. In 1985, she was the first woman to be appointed Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department, and thereafter, the first woman to be appointed Presiding Justice of that court. Following her retirement from the bench in 2005, she has been Senior Counsel at Alston & Bird's New York City office in its Litigation & Trial Practice Group, and she also serves as a neutral arbitrator at JAMS. Justice Ellerin currently resides in New York City.
The New York City Bar Association, through its Women in the Legal Profession Committee, commissioned a portrait of Justice Ellerin by artist Patty Horing, who lives and works in New York City. The portrait will be displayed in the City Bar's landmarked building at 42 West 44th Street as part of the "Women on the Walls" initiative. The initiative honors female members of the legal profession with strong ties to the New York City legal community, with the goal of achieving gender representation on the walls of the City Bar's building.
