Salary Negotiation for Lawyers: What You Need to Know

Salary negotiation is an essential, but often overlooked, component of the job search process. This panel will cover common questions including: when to begin the conversation around salary expectations with a prospective employer; essential steps for preparing to negotiate compensation; how to respond to a low offer, or present a counteroffer; considerations to keep in mind when negotiating pay with a law firm vs. an in-house role or public interest position; and how New York City’s recent law prohibiting employers from inquiring about a candidate’s salary history affects the negotiation process. The panelists will also cover tips for negotiating a raise with a current employer.
