Social media use has become an indispensable part of the practice and business of law. Lawyers are successfully using social media to promote their practice and develop their brand, to educate, to communicate with clients and the public and to conduct investigations. At the same time, lawyers' heightened ethical obligations create issues for unwary users. Guarding confidentiality, controlling communications, observing restraints on attorney advertising and complying with on-line regulations can become problematic as demonstrated by the steady stream of stories about lawyers whose social media gaffes got them into hot water.
Join our panel of experts as they navigate the ethical traps of social media. The panel will explore the interplay of rules of professional conduct with social media usage and address best practices for active users. The panel will also address ethical issues raised by social media for litigators. The program includes practical insights into social media technology, from privacy settings to conducting investigations and obtaining evidence. The panel will then join together to explore topical hypothetical fact patterns providing analytical tools and practical solutions.
