Anne-Marie Slaughter describes What Works for Women at Work as a book "that every working woman should read…and every man who works with women should read." Written by Joan C. Williams, Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for WorkLife Law at the University of California, Hastings College of Law and her daughter, Yale Law student Rachel Dempsey, the book is based on decades of research, interviews with successful women and anecdotal evidence, and is an indispensable guide to mastering office politics as a woman. It examines four distinct patterns of workplace behavior, including the Maternal Wall, 'Prove It Again!', the Tug of War, and the Tightrope, that impede women's advancement to leadership positions. The panel will expand upon the concrete strategies and advice offered in the book to counter these scenarios.
